Chia seeds are a new food and used as an ingredient in the manufacture of breads, in the preparation of breakfast cereals and in mixtures of seeds and nuts.

奇亞籽營養確實非常豐富,其含有必須脂肪酸,有助降低膽固醇,亦含有豐富抗氧化物,可以對抗自由基。

含有水溶性纖維(可推動排便)及非水溶性纖維(可增加便量),纖維亦可以穩定血糖。當中有九種胺基酸,可製造完整蛋白質,適合素食人士。然而,因其脂肪含量較高,所以每天一湯匙就夠晒數,而患有腎病及正在服食薄血丸人士亦要注意,就盡量不要吃奇亞籽。

食用時將兩湯匙加入300毫升水中,靜置5分鐘就會呈現膠狀物質。攪拌後即可食用,亦可加入其他食物中。加入果汁、乳酪或麥皮是最簡單的營養早餐。亦可伴入沙拉,增加養份。

如果食譜要用麵粉、鷹粟粉或薯仔增稠或打芡,可以奇亞籽替代。將數匙未發的奇亞籽加入湯汁或醬料中,靜置10分鐘,待呈現膠狀便有勾芡效果。
